(17/30) We Will Always Be Here For You

The prompt for day seventeen over at NaPoWriMo: write a poem re-telling a family anecdote that has stuck with you over time

Parents say
they would like
to die before
their children;

mines were no different.

It was so confusing
hearing, we will always
be here for you
mixed
in with we’re not going
to always be around
.

When they died,
part of me cursed
them for lying and
bringing about a
self-fulfilling prophecy.

It wasn’t until
one cold Saturday
afternoon in my
twenties;

sifting through
old photos and memories,

did I finally understand
what they meant.
